GENERAL

Two BCCSSAA Junior Athlete Awards will be given to students who best combine the qualifications set out in our guidelines. As a winner of this award, the recipient will be eligible to receive up to $250.00 toward a sports camp of their choice.

ELIGIBILITY
To be eligible for this award, a student must be a registered grade ten student at a Christian Senior Secondary School.

QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must show evidence of:
(1) athletic ability and performance
(2) scholastic achievement and goals (a minimum average of C+ is mandatory in order for application to be considered)
(3) leadership and character
(4) school, community, and church participation

HOW TO APPLY
(1) Applicants must download and complete the BCCSSAA Junior Athlete Award form (on the sidebar to the right) and submit it to the principal of his/her secondary school.
(2) The principal’s office is required to mail the following items direct to the current president of the association:
- the student’s application form
- a copy of the student’s current grade 10 marks attached to the student’s application form
- the principal’s own confidential supporting letter certifying the student’s participation in school and community activities, both athletic and non-athletic, plus a separatepriority ranking of candidates if more than one is applying from the same school.

(Please submit these four components of the student’s application in the above listed order, and realize that the last component is not a critical factor in the review process.)

SELECTION
Applicants will be reviewed and recipients selected by the Governing Committee by June 14.

AWARDS
Successful applicants for the BCCSSAA Junior Athlete Award will receive notice of their award by June 30 of the current year.

DATE OF SUBMISSION
All applications and supporting letters must be RECEIVED no later than June 1 of the current year and be addressed to the current president of the association. For the name and address of the current president, ask your school’s athletic director.

Luke, our first president, was taken home to our Lord a number of years ago after struggling with cancer. His wife Sandy and family endorse our initiative as Christian coaches in the establishment of this program.

GENERAL
Two Luke Van Harmelen Memorial Scholarships valued at $1000.00 each will be awarded to students who best combine the qualifications set out in our guidelines.

(1) a registered grade twelve student at a Christian Senior Secondary School in our Association
(2) planning to attend a designated post-secondary education institution on a full time basis

QUALIFICATIONS

(3) scholastic achievement
(4) completeness and quality of application

HOW TO APPLY
(1) Applicants must download and complete the form (on the sidebar to the right) and write a personal letter of application. The letter of application must outline scholastic and athletic achievements in grades eleven and twelve only, educational goals, and school, community, and church activities in which the applicant has participated. It should be typewritten on 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper and should be limited to no more than three pages.
(2) The following items need to be completed and sent along with the application form and application letter to the current president of the association. The current president of the association can be found on our website www.bccssaa.com.
- a copy of a completed “Early Submission of Grades” form for the student
- the attached reference sheet from the athletic director in consultation with the coach
- the attached reference sheet from an administrator (ie. Vice Principal or Principal)
- from the principal, a priority ranking of the candidates if more than one is applying from the same school.

(Please submit these components of the student’s application in the above listed order, and realize that the last component is not a critical factor in the review process.)

(3) The applicant must include a 2″ x 3″ photo (head and shoulders) which should be attached to the space provided on the student’s application form. This photo will not be returned.

SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED
Successful Luke Van Harmelen Memorial Scholarship applicants will receive a letter informing them of their award. Upon confirmation of registration at a designated post-secondary educational institution, the scholarship money will be sent to the institution.

Luke Van Harmelen Memorial Scholarship winners may defer receipt of their awards for a period no longer than one academic year; however, deferment requests must be submitted in writing and include an explanation.

1. Cross Country Tournament Tips:

- set up a route between 3 km and 5 km.
- mark out route with flags or neon tape tied to trees.
- have a runner run the route once, the day before the meet, to make sure the route is easily discernable.
- have the finish line clearly marked

- recruit competent adults to time and record times in proper age groups.

- 6 medallions, one for each division winner
- ribbons for 2nd to 6th place

2. Basketball Tournament Tips

**Post draw at least 1 week before tournament.

- make sure your backboards are in good working order
- make sure you have mats on the wall under the hoops.
- you should have at least 1 good leather game ball of the proper size. (Size 6 for all girls and gr. 8 boys, Size 7 for Junior and Senior Boys)
- make sure your score clock and 30 sec. clock are in good working order.
- no gate charge Gr. 8 and Jr. tournaments
- Gr. 8’s: - 3 games minimum with 8 minute quarters
- courtesy rule of no pressing when there is a 20-point difference in score.
- Jr.’s: - 3 games minimum with 8 minute quarters.

3. Volleyball Tournament Tips

- make a note of any serving or out of bound impediments that will need to be discussed with coaches.

4. Badminton Tournament Tips

- make sure you have enough courts available
- check nets and standards to make sure they are regulation
- make sure you have enough birds (at least 50 of the Mavis 300: colour- yellow)
- endeavour to provide 3 matches to 11, 15, or 21 points per competitor
- no gate charge
- a school rep. (E.g.. teacher, employee, board member) must accompany any participating players. This statement must be included in the tournament information sent to participating teams.
- the entry fee (over and above the deposit) for athletes must accompany the registration forms when they are required by the host school
- school shirts preferred
** - cost is $3.00 per entry, per category.
- players may enter 2 categories. It is up to the coordinator if a 3rd is allowed.

Awards

- an Association trophy for the overall Champion school in each age division (gr. 8, junior, and senior)
- medallions for the winners in each category (i.e. girls singles, boys singles, girls doubles, boys doubles, mixed doubles)
- ribbons for the 2nd and 3rd place finishers in each category

- Small pools with round robin play. Then a single elimination playoff
- Double elimination only (less games for players)

5. Track & Field Tournament Tips

- make sure track facilities and equipment are booked.
- recruit lots of competent helpers for record keeping, running results to record keepers, helping time, etc.
- gathering all required equipment together
- assembling coaches packets with schedule, officiating duties, and adhesive stickers for “show and go”(different colours for each division)
- ONE MONTH prior to the meet, schools must have their eligibility forms in to the host school.
- a non-refundable deposit of $50.00 will be required at registration time. Entry fees over and above this deposit will be required at the meet.
** - cost is $3.00 per athlete.
- events will be 100, 200, 400, 800, 1500, 4X100, 4X400, Long Jump, Triple Jump, High Jump, Shot Put, Discus, Javelin, and the Sprint Hurdles. Additional events will be up to the discretion of the coordinator.
- each school is allowed 3 entries in each event in Grade 8 and Junior and 4 in each event in the Senior division.
- a “show and go” method is recommended for the meet.
- each attending school must fulfill an officiating obligation to meet standards.
